When planning what to make as my best of DIY, I was stumped.  What am I best at?  Where do I fit in?  What is unique that I do?  What type of projects do I like to make?

It should be something with wood.  I make several things with spindles.  I design many projects around spindles.  I’ve loved spindles from my childhood and playing around my grandparent’s spindle bed.  Something with spindles and easy to make.

My best of DIY Spindle Crate!

Crates are easy to make.  I want to share how to easy it is to break apart an old chair and spilt a spindle in two.

So let’s do the best of DIY!

and break apart an old chair!

I use a rubber mallet to take apart an old chair.

Now that the chair has been banged apart…let’s split a spindle in half.

Assembly

I gathered leftover boards.  Two for the ends and one for the bottom.  I little wood glue and small nails will hold the boards together.

The spindles are cut to fit across the crate for the sides.  I used two old spindles…split.  A spindle from a brown chair on one side and one from a white painted chair on the other side.

Aging the wood and spindles

Plus a small spindle for a handle.  I aged the boards with tea and ironed vinegar.  You can read more about the aging wood technique here.

You can see it works quickly.

I then dry brushed over the wood with chalky paint.

Then filled the crate with Bells of Ireland and Waxflower stems in mason jars.
