How to make DIY Scrap Wood Tags

Next time you think about tossing scrap wood pieces into the fireplace, stop and try this instead. How to make DIY scrap wood tags.

It takes a tiny piece of the wood for me to give up and toss it in the trash. I have been known to pick small bits of trim from the dustpan. 

If you save up the small pieces of wood, you’ll end up with an enough to make a mantel! 🙂

Here’s how I made this collection 

My scrap pile this time had 1/8 inch and 3/4 inch thick wood. Some are 3 inches wide, and others are 3 1/2 inches wide. 

I used a miter saw to cut the wood. Tags are between 4 and 6 inches long. 

Next, I made 45-degree cuts along the two top corners for the label shape.

Then, I use a 1/8 inch drill bit to make a hole for the twine.

After two coats of chalk-based paint in favorite colors, the wood tags are ready to decorate.

Make hangtags that are as great as the gift.

Now the real fun starts, decorating the tags.

I used Chalk Couture to add elements to the tags. My hanging labels will end up in the craft room.

Ideas to use hanging tags in decorating

  1. Hang from a lamp
  2. Lay on the edge of a stack of books
  3. Hang from a dresser knob
  4. Wrap around a mason jar
  5. Add to wood beads
  6. Use to label sweet and unsweet tea
  7. Assign coat rack hooks
  8. Label contents of crates
  9. Tie into a wreath
