There was a point in my life that going to Mardi Gras was on my bucket list.
I never made it.
Now as I’m a bit older, Mardi Gras fell off my bucket.
There are a few things that fell off my bucket…but we won’t go there. 🙂

Leave off the sugars and this easy King Cake recipe is great for any morning.

King Cake Recipe Quick

List of ingredients

One sheet of puff pastry {remove from freezer 40 minutes before making your cake}
4 ounces of softened cream cheese
1/2 cup chopped nuts {I used walnuts but pecans are great too}
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon room temperature butter
Yellow, green and purple sugars {or I used 1/2 cup regular cup and food coloring to make the colors of sugar}

The Steps

Unfold the puff pastry and cut in half with sharp knife.  Place end to end with 1/4 inch overlap. Seal with water.  I dip a finger in the water and rub lightly over pastry dough.  Then lightly press the other piece in place.

Dipping my finger in the water again, I started overlapping one side then the other.  Looks like a braid…almost.

Using the other 2 ounces of cream cheese mix with butter.  Then add the powdered sugar.  Mix well.  I like the icing to “flow” over the cake.  If it’s too stiff I add teaspoons of water until it the consistency I want.  Too watery…add more powdered sugar.

Pour the icing over the cake letting it fall down through the cracks and crevices.  Then sprinkle the three different colors of sugars.

The colors represent; green for faith, gold for power and purple for justice.

Leave off the colors and it’s just good for breakfast! 🙂
