Are you in need of an organizer to hold craft supplies?  I’m working on turning an unused space upstairs into a craft room. The organization will be extremely important.   Since I can’t throw away even the broken pieces, clutter can overwhelm any space.  Doesn’t everyone have a jammed closet or whole room?

Do you have to stand back when you open the door?

This idea will not help you with organizing the whole room, but it will make >>small<<supplies pretty enough to display in any room.

Inside the guest room closets are bins and bins and bins of ribbon, trim, buttons, bits of fabric, paper, metal…you name it, it’s in there. To organize all these bits and pieces I decided to use a hanging system.  I bought several bags of little clips.  This rack holds the clips but I wanted vintage, so I had to come up with something different.

Here’s what I came up with…

  I grabbed a thrift store lampshade, a spindle, and a knob.  First, I stripped off the yellowed and dusty fabric and trim.

I made a sort of a lamp base from crib spindles and wood circles.  The two circles I cut using a jigsaw.  Then routered the edges for detail.  I drilled a hole in the middle to glue the spindle upright.

Then I added an old knob to act as a finial and hold the shade frame in place but still allowing the frame to spin.  To add the knob I drilled a hole in the top of the spindle. Next, I added a double ended screw.  Then added the knob.

Next, I used shabby chic scrapbook paper to make hanging tab dividers. You can download and print out your own here.  Please note the paper is a bit different.  I didn’t have more paper to photograph to make the download.  But this paper is cute too.  I removed the categories so you can write~in your own…or go the stamping route.  Or grab scrapbook paper here in your style.

Loose items are gathered in the small envelopes and those cute button envelopes from new clothes. Ribbons wrapped around large tags.

I also used several tags to wrap ribbon and trim.  Sometimes I even sewed small pieces to the tag.  Okay, the large tags have a paw print because I stamped way too many for a Humane Society event.

Next, I clipped my tags and envelopes using little clips to the wire of the lampshade.  Then hooked on the wire shade, and…

More Ideas for DIY Organizer

If you wish to make a DIY craft organizer like this and want to skip the woodworking, here are some ideas;

  • Use skinny thrift store lamps as the base.  Remove wiring, remove fabric or the paper from the shade, add clips.
  • Look for wooden paper towel holders.
  • Set the shade upside down on the tabletop using the top. {or bottom, since it’s sitting upside down}
  • Hang the lampshade from the ceiling to the perfect height.
  • Extend the idea of hanging the lampshade by hanging several.  Hang a small rope or cord thread the lampshade on the rope.  Add knots to separate the shades.

If you have bits and pieces of stuff, let me know what you use to organize it in the comments below.  I love reading your ideas.

  1. Great idea! I’ve got lots of stuff from my previous projects and I always struggle on where to put all of them without ruining anything. Good thing I stumble upon your post! I’ve been following you for quite some time now and I love all the projects. Kudos!

  2. What a great idea!! I’ve been eyeing some lamp shades at GW lately for a macrame project, but I could really use the storage more! All my trims are in a bin, sewing box and who knows where else. This would look cute and be efficient at the same time! Thank you Jeanette 😊
