I have the joy of teaming up with some DIY ladies as part of a Christmas blog hop.   We are welcoming you into our homes for a Christmas Home Tour.  We are each sharing five tips with you on how we decorate for the holidays.  If you’re hopping over from 2 Bees in a Pod…welcome!  I love their southern vintage style.

Christmas Tree Ideas

Before we get into our tree too deep, let me say, it photographs awfully!  The best place to set up our tree is this corner in the living room.

One – Decorate with humor.  Put a ladder in the tree!  Do make sure to set the ladder against the tree last!  I placed the ladder then turned to add some of the branches to the top…and almost climbed the ladder instead of my stepstool!  Yikes!

The ladder is my spindle ladder…click to see the tutorial.

Another humorous…or not…is my dead bulb ornament.  Collect your favorite color of Christmas bulbs that are burnt out and add into a glass terrarium ornament.

Two – Use handmade ornaments.   Any store bought ornament looks better hanging next to an empty spool of thread made into a drum. Don’t you think?

Three – Make the tree glow.  Adding white bulbs deep in the tree branches make the tree glow from within.  This year I used white pinecones lights to add a glow to our tree.  I’m always asking about the icicle ornaments.  I bought them many years ago but found these at Amazon that are similar.

Four – Decorate in your current style.  We live in a cabin.  Our first couple of Christmas trees had a cabin style.  Since I started blogging, my style has evolved into a farmhouse style.  Our tree has grown into a farmhouse style too.  I added ribbons of burlap starting from the top, tucking in here and there until I reach the bottom.

Below are more links to Christmas tree items made in past years.

Three French Hens
Icicle Branches
Picket Fence

Five – Collection of tips for artificial trees.
Cut up pieces of garland to add around the tree pole.  Add pieces of garland or real tree branches into the tree.  Use water picks to add real pine branches.
Add a bucket of pine branches to set next to the tree for pine smells.
If your tree has sections, add the topper before placing the last section.  It’s easier to get it straight on a table than hanging 6 feet from a ladder.

To help find all those light plugs next year on pre-lit trees, place the plug in a zip bag.  Just zip close leaving the wire coming out from the bag.  The bags are much easier to find than green plugs in a green tree.

Sharing our home for Christmas

I tend to keep the other decorating around the house simple…and fun!

Like opening the Christmas decor box once again this year only to see a tangle of Christmas lights.  Once again not wanting to untangle…I found the plugs…and they worked!  So I hung them tangled on a nail and added a burlap bow.  Done!

For the last eleven years…I’ve detested our living room mantel.  This September I redecorated our living room and mantel into an industrial farmhouse style.  I love it.  So for Christmas, I kept the mantel simple and added a few bottle brush trees.  Done!

Here’s more Christmas decor around the house.  Click on the images to see tutorials.
