Thrift Benefit for Sheltered Animals

| |

Sharing helps others too!

thrift-benefit-before-country-design-styleThis is the second annual Thrift Benefit for Sheltered Animals!

What does that mean?

Twenty-two DIY bloggers got together to shop for projects at local thrift shops that sponsor a local animal shelter or…

they are sharing their furry animal stories or…

they are simply helping to bring awareness to the needs of sheltered animals.

I shopped…

and this is the shelf that I found at our local thrift shop that sponsors our local humane society.

I related to it on a physical level!

More on that in a bit!

Please click to read more and see lots of thrifty projects from 22 bloggers!

I had the wonderful opportunity to join 21 other DIY bloggers for the Thrift Benefit this year.  Scroll down to enjoy and share all the projects and stories.

My project

thrift-benefit-before-country-design-styleNow, why did I related physically to this $4 shelf at our Humane Society Resale Shop??

Well, I recently got braces.  One tooth was starting to stick out more than the others.

Notice the one large peg surrounded by random placement of smaller pegs…

just like my tooth!

Live demo

thrift benefit painting demo https://countrydesignstyle.comI fixed the pegs by removing all the smaller pegs.  Then added a large peg to match the one that stood out.  I filled lots of holes with spackle.

Now the shelf is buck-toothed!

Wish this would work on my teeth!  So much faster than braces!

It’s time to paint!  So I did a painting demo at the Humane Society Resale Store.

Yep!  That’s me with my braces!

thrift benefit video graphic https://countrydesignstyle.comI had the pleasure of joining Karen from Dogs Don’t Eat Pizza, Laura with Lovely Wren, and Jessica at Designers Sweet Spot this morning to do a fun video.  You can click on the image above or here to view and hear “in person” our stories, animals, and projects.

The shelf finished

Here’s the $4 shelf all dressed for Christmas.  I painted it a light turquoise blue.  Then used petroleum jelly on the places that I wanted the turquoise to show.  The second coat was Christmasy red.  A very light sanding to let the turquoise peek through and I was done!

Thank you to all the locals that attended the painting demo.  I enjoyed the interaction and activities.  I will be re~donating all the items painted during the demos to the Humane Society Resale Store.

Let’s do it again!

  1. That shelf was such a great find and you turned it into the perfect Christmas Elf shelf!! Thank you so much for running the benefit again this year, Jeanette. You did a great job and it was such a success!! The bloggers had so many creative ideas. I love that some of them are donating the items right back to the shelter or thrift store and I hope to find a way to do something like that too!!

  2. Thanks so much for putting this all together- what a fun event for a great cause!
Love your shelf and the unexpected turquoise and red combo is perfect for a vintagey holiday!
I laughed out loud when you compared it to your teeth- my dear friend got braces as an adult and she was super happy with the results (of course we thought she looked just fine before lol)
